We recommend Windows 10 and minimum of 16 GB of memory. For advanced graphics work: a generous amount of memory is important. As a guide a dedicated Graphics card with its own on-board memory of at least 4GB that supports OpenGL 3.0 or higher is recommended. For advanced 3D work or Graphics programs: such as Photoshop, the graphics card is very important and cannot generally be changed after you have bought the unit. There are three key points to consider when buying a computer for advanced work: You must balance the weight of the computer with the features you need. You had built your business on the web, which everybody had. I mean, it was controversial inside the company because of course you have this new platform, not that many people have iPhones yet, but it did feel like a really important moment for the company. It felt like a new starting line for the company, so we took it very seriously. For us, it ended up being, we’ve got to win this. We realized very quickly when it was born and that there was going to be an app platform, that that would make our service better. One of the challenges of using Yelp way back when was knowing the user’s location, especially when they were on the go, and so the iPhone changed that. It was a pretty remarkable moment because Yelp was about reputation of local businesses and local businesses have an address. and put up reviews and things like that and people on the go would have it. When you were doing that, the idea is that you just sought information that people were. I can’t even imagine, how many are there now? I think there were about 200 apps at that time. You were, again, one of the earliest apps on the platform. I think Matt Kohler might have invented that phrase, but I’ve stolen it. I think consumers expect not just to find information but then be able to transact, and so that’s been a big emphasis for us building out Yelp’s platform, enabling consumers to get quotes, for instance, from our Request A Quote functionality, being able to make reservations at restaurants, add themselves to the waitlist at very popular places, like lots of cool transactional stuff. Obviously we started as a regular old website and then invested early in the iPhone and had our app take off, but there is transition now. Is there nothing that’s not mobile for you? We talked about that last time, is that everything is mobile. What have been the overall trends? Mobile, obviously. There’s a lot of revenue in advertisers to be signed up, so it still feels like a very long runway for Yelp. Things with local intent is a huge percentage of search. I see it as a very large space, so local search is huge. How are you looking at the company now? As a private company, obviously it has to be making money because you couldn’t be. Yeah, I know, but you’ve been around for a long time.ġ4 years, right. We do our yoga and Pilates and stay limber. How are you thinking of it right now? It’s one of the grandfather companies, really, of web 2.0. How do you look at the company now? A lot of people thought you would have sold the company by now or gone public or whatever. We got into the food delivery space and then it kind of changed on us and we got out of the food delivery space. We sold recently a company, Eat24, that we had purchased a few years prior. We’ve got a really big mobile app these days. A lot of things are the same, a lot of things are different. What’s going on at Yelp? What’s been happening there since we chatted? We talked about a lot of things then. How you doing? What’s going on since 2015? We’re going to talk about everything that has changed since then, which is a lot. He’s one of the first people that was on this show. Jeremy has been on the show before, back in December 2015. Today in the red chair is Jeremy Stoppelman, who I’ve known for a long time. You may know me as the person who left you a one-star review on Yelp, but in my spare time I talk tech, and you’re listening to Recode Decode from the Vox Media podcast network. Kara Swisher: Hi, I’m Kara Swisher, executive editor of Recode. If you like this, be sure to subscribe to Recode Decode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, Overcast or wherever you listen to podcasts. Below, we’ve also provided a lightly edited complete transcript of their conversation. You can read a write-up of the interview here or listen to the whole thing in the audio player above. While this allows you to store a lot of books on your Kindle, 4GB simply can’t be enough for someone with a vast collection. The storage, in my opinion, is a real letdown here, as the Voyage only comes with 4GB onboard storage. So there’s nothing to write home about with regards to the design. The Voyage comes with a primary and standard slate-like design that we’ve seen on many Kindles before. This could prove to be a significant factor for customers who are considering the two eBook readers. The display, however, leaves a lot to be desired, as it has a built-in light for illumination in the dark. Sure it lacks water resistance and some of the other fancy features, but it’s still a pretty decent eBook reader, meant for the purists. One of the biggest positives with the Voyage is that it’s significantly cheaper than the new Oasis. Although the weight between the two devices is barely distinguishable, so we can’t deem this to be an advantage for the Voyage. Most importantly, its slender body, containing a 6-inch display, is easier to hold, and lighter too. However, the Voyage has its appeal attached to it. The tried and tested premium Kindle, the Voyage, could be old news very soon, given that Amazon is heavily marketing the all-new waterproof Oasis. If your goal is to read as many books as efficiently as you can, then you can’t look much further than the all-new Kindle Oasis. However, this is the most advanced eBook reader that you will come across in the wild. Many would consider getting a full blown tablet for that price, and they won’t be wrong to consider that. The eReader with WiFi + 3G will is available on Amazon right now. PricingĪs we said, the Oasis won’t come cheap. It is expected to stay that way for the foreseeable future, and we’re unlikely to see any changes. But that’s not saying much because the Oasis doesn’t have a lot of competition in the market right now. Keeping these things in mind, it’s essential to understand that the Oasis is better in almost every way possible. The device comes with 8 or 32GB of onboard storage, which can store thousands of books without ever running out of space. This means you won’t have to shuffle around for a charger every two days. As for the battery life, Amazon claims that the Oasis can last for weeks on a single charge. It is recommended to be on an unlimited plan to avoid unnecessary overages. This allows users to sync their eBooks using mobile data, rather than waiting for a WiFi connection. The Voyage is available in WiFi-only as well as WiFi + 3G models, much like the Voyage. This ensures that you can stay hooked to your book for extended intervals. It’s clear that the device was prepared with ergonomics in mind. There are buttons on the edge to help you flip the page conveniently. The design also needs a special mention here as it comes with suitably placed handgrips for comfortable usage. The eReader is water-resistant, which is a big deal for eReaders, although not particularly for mobile devices in the industry. The Oasis is also slightly thicker than the Voyage, which is to be expected given the fact that it’s a significantly upgraded model. Perhaps the pricing is the only difference, and maybe the con here as you’ll have to shell out significantly more on the Oasis than on the Voyage. When we compare with the Voyage, the Oasis is miles ahead in most departments. Pros and ConsĪs with any device, there are bound to be pros and cons, although there aren’t many here. Its gorgeous 7-inch display puts it in the tablet category, but it’s still very much an eBook reader at heart. The screen also comes with 12 LEDs for illumination, something that the Voyage doesn’t have. For starters, it comes with a larger display, allowing users to grasp in more content per book. The 2017 Kindle Oasis is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Pricing: Does the cost of the tool meet the services it provides? Or even better, if available can you still get good use out of the free version of the tool?.Integrations: Can the software be easily integrated with other tools and project management software you might already use?.Additional/ non-task related features: What more does the tool bring to the table? For example, how far can the software automate task management or how easily can coworkers collaborate on projects?.Task-specific features: What are the task management tools that the software provides? How well do they allow individuals / teams / companies to get tasks completed?. User Experience: How accessible is the software? Are all of its features easy to use or well-explained with a tutorial? How quickly can a novice become familiar with the software?.User Interface: This ranges from the use of colors for labeling specific tasks to the ability to customize the platform design Anything to do with the appearance of the service itself. Here are the six areas that I have decided to focus on: In reviewing the top 10 software tools for task management, particular criteria will be used to accredit each service. What makes for a great task management software tool? This can show employees which tasks need their attention ahead of others. For example, tasks are listed in terms of urgency. The use of task management tools can assist with reinstating some of this structure. Taking this pressure off employees also contributes to better wellbeing, less stress and increases productivity.Īdditionally, remote working has contributed to a tendency for a lack of structure in the working day. As such, the use of task management tools presents an opportunity for teams to collaborate without having to constantly communicate. The normal working week has been remolded with this new approach to work. Task management tools act as a virtual notice board, this assists employees to recognize what is expected of them. The experience of working from home can feel very detached from that of the office. From having to babysit children to dealing with a useless internet connection, the home office has its unique charm. Working remotely presents an entirely new set of challenges for any individual. How do task management tools make a difference to remote work? Through using a task management tool, companies can concentrate efforts on completing more relevant and engaging tasks. It automates the long-winded and monotonous job of ensuring that employees complete tasks and subtasks, whilst also meeting their deadlines. These tools can even help to prioritize particular tasks, enabling teams to collaborate more efficiently and effectively. In some ways, these software tools provide better channels of communication than simply working in the office itself. Task management tools streamline the process of delegating tasks and obtaining status updates. In a remote work environment, this is extremely useful as it communicates to each team member the relevant information for them. Thus enabling employees to observe timelines for specific projects. They can also provide a means for tracking the progress and completion of tasks. They are useful for determining what needs to be done, and by who. Essentially, these tools assist teams in assigning tasks. Task Management is the process of managing a task through its life cycle. The main attraction is this ability to identify, monitor and manage the work of each employee. The resultant response has seen a growing trend in companies and teams making use of task management tools. As teams now rarely, share an office it is far more difficult to ensure everyone is on the same page. The migration of organizations from working in offices to remote work has inevitably had adverse effects for productivity and task management. I mean, for us, if you look at publicly available data, it’s only about 10 percent of our imports. And I think you’ve also seen European leaders talk about the need to reduce their reliance and to diversify.Īnd we are continuing to look at other options we could take right now to cut U.S. That’s why we’re surging LNG to Europe to help accelerate its diversification from Russian gas. That includes, of course, shutting down Nord Stream 2 or preventing Nord Stream 2 from operating. I would also note that we are also take - we have been taking steps to degrade Russia’s status as a leading energy supplier over time. So, as the President has said, we carved out payments for energy, trade, and transport from our financial sectors - sanctions with that in mind. It could also - it also has the potential to pad the pockets of President Putin, which is exactly what we are not trying to do. And that is certainly a big factor for the President in this - at this moment. And it’s as simple as: Less supply raises prices. And that would raise prices at the gas pump for the American people, around the world, because it would reduce the supply available. Well, our objective and the President’s objective has been to maximize impact on President Putin and Russia, while minimizing impact to us and our allies and partners.Īnd I know you’ve heard me say this a few times before, but we don’t have a strategic interest in reducing the global supply of energy. PSAKI: Yes, I think I do know what you’re trying to say. So why keep the carveout, you know, especially when oil - with the argument that Putin is bene- is going to not benefit from oil? You know what I’m trying to say. Pelosi has come out also in support of banning Russian oil. Q They’re already above 111, or so, dollars a barrel. With that, Colleen, why don’t you kick us off? So, congratulations, and thank you for all of your work on behalf of the American people. And she’s going on - I mean, you’ve already announced this I feel like I’m announcing news, but it’s been announced - to host “Weekend Edition” for NPR.Īs an NPR listener, I look forward to being in my sweatpants and coffee and listening to you this weekend. I also wanted to note, it is Ayesha Rascoe’s last day in the briefing room - (applause) - seat, before - yes, thank you for all of your work. The bill would not have been possible without bipartisan work, including from those members of Congress who will be in attendance today: Representatives Bustos and Representative Griffith, and Senator Gillibrand and Senator Graham. President Biden has long spoken against forced arbitration clauses in employment contracts, and today marks an important milestone in empowering survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment and protecting employee rights. This law will affect the more than 60 million workers who are subject to mandatory arbitration clauses in the workplace, often without realizing it until they come forward with a claim against their employer. The bill amends the Federal Arbitration Act to make it easier for victims of sexual assault or harassment to go to court instead of being forced into arbitration by their employer. As you all know, later today the President will sign the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act into law. Just wanted to note one thing before we get started. It’s not an exaggeration to say that death has hung over most of Elton John’s career. "Tiny Dancer" ('Madman Across the Water,' 1971).As sturdy as any John/Taupin composition, it’s no surprise the song still rings true four decades later. 12 at the Hot 100, proving he could hang with the Duran Durans of the world (even though actually hanging with Duran Duran while filming the clip led to his near-total self-destruction). Its Motown hookiness, northern soul energy, and hint of ’80s pop edge kicked down the doors at MTV - helped, of course, by a globe-trotting and skin-baring Russell Mulcahy music video - and took him to No. Luckily for him, “Standing” quickly revealed itself as a self-fulfilling prophecy. After a rocky end to his ’70s and a couple maybe-maybe-not attempts to jump start his ’80s, Elton sorta needed a no-doubter to officially get himself back in the game, lest the new wave generation leave him for dead like it at least tried to do with so many other ’70s relics. It might not get the classic rock support of most of his ’70s hits, but “I’m Still Standing” was about as important to Elton John’s career as any of ’em. To everyone else, come blast off with us on a timeless flight into one of the most out-of-this-world catalogs in the history of popular music. It’s all still just scratching the surface of his generations-spanning career - and we’ve no doubt there’s plenty more to come - but whether your own Reginald Dwight journey has been more of a yellow brick road or a tumbleweed connection, we expect you’ll find plenty here to love. To celebrate that upcoming personal milestone (though given his own historic birthday commemorations, ours will likely pale in comparison) we’ve put together a list of our 75 favorite Elton John songs. He’s also got one of the top five songs in the world, right now, just a day removed from his 75th birthday. He’s got the more intangible career markers, too: iconic movie sing-alongs to his songs, groundbreaking performances alongside unlikely collaborators, a key role in the childhood of anyone who was of Disney-watching age in 1994. He’s got the greatest-selling single of the last 50 years, with a song he says he’s played a total of three times and listened to exactly once. 1 albums, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, the Walk of Fame star, the Kennedy Center Honor, the knighthood. Arguably no artist outside of The Beatles has meant more to both the pop and rock canons over the last 60 years than Elton John, having accomplished nearly every measure of success and longevity that a musician could hope to achieve in either genre. One thing is for sure, though - you’ve got plenty to choose from. It can make any discussion about your Elton favorites feel like a schizophrenic experience. On the other hand, he’s Elton John the rock singer/songwriter - the guy who idolized Levon Helm and Leon Russell, who (along with longtime creative partner Bernie Taupin) made entire Western-themed albums without pulling any singles from them, who found late-career inspiration in such artists as Ryan Adams and Low Cut Connie, who co-penned some of the most covered piano ballads in history, who at the end of the day was just one half of The Captain and the Kid. On one hand, he’s Elton John the pop idol - the guy behind the outrageous fashion statements, the celebrity duets, the expansive albums and tours, the cross-platform ubiquity, and the many, many iconic smash hits. Trying to evaluate the totality of Elton John’s legendary 50-plus-year run as a musician is a tricky proposition, because in many ways, his career has always run on two separate tracks.
